The sheriff’s office has had certified SCUBA divers since the mid 1970’s. However, in 2004 Sheriff Bailey officially formed the Underwater Recovery Team. Team members are deputies who achieve their SCUBA certification and remain available to be called out for the search and recovery of underwater evidence.
Today the team was conducting dive training in Quarry Park’s 23-acre quarry. Part of today’s training incorporated a remote controlled sonar boat owned and operated by the Central Ohio Child Emergency Response Team, which the Marion County Sheriff’s Office is an active member of. During this training, divers discovered two submerged vehicles. Recovered was a red truck, which was reported as stolen from Marion County, and the other truck has not been reported stolen, but the owner lives in Union County.
Divers place empty bags under the trucks and then fill them up with air which helps gets the vehicles to the surface to be hooked up to the tow truck. The team trains on these skills, along with underwater search patterns, crime scene processing and photography.
Today’s finds were an added bonus to an already scheduled training day!
